It doesn't try to make you feel good, it doesn't try to make you comfortable, it doesn't try to respect your time or your conventions. It's merely telling the story with no punches pulled.
If you love what Hollywood usually produces and you want a story all wrapped in a pretty package, you're not going to like this movie. This is grit, this is often real time, and it doesn't care if you're tired of the pace. To a degree, it's an exercise in the viewers patience and your limits.
And that's what I overall like about this movie more than anything else. It is exactly what it wants to be and that is unlike anything else. At times, it almost revels in it and dares you to tire, dares you to stop, dares you to turn it off. But it's always surprising, always unique, even in its tedium.
One other reviewer said that you're better off watching a rerun of True Blood with a bottle of wine. And I can kind of see where that person is coming from.
If you're the kind of person that's looking for escape, looking for a story that makes you feel nice and is well paced, this is not it. If you're the kind of person that wants to watch True Blood reruns, then this isn't for you. And not that there's anything even wrong with True Blood, but this movie is for the person who's tired of watching reruns, tired of a pretty package in a bow, tired of the same old story told again slightly different.
So tired, in fact, you will take a little punishment just to see something different. And that's kind of the point, it's not suppose to be easy.
