I recently rented this film from the local library and couldn't believe what I saw, this film is so good! This film did great at depicting the mayhem and nightmarish atmosphere of when WW2 finally hit Shanghai,1 good example of that feat was the scene when all the people were stampeding in fear and flooding the streets so much that it was like a human river. Christian Bale was superb in his 1st role ever,no wonder he continued being so great in his later films such as "Newsies","American Psycho",and the recent "Batman Begins". The 2 favorite scenes of mine are when he notices the flashing lights at night and plays along using his flashlight, then BOOM! A big explosion occurrs and he thinks it was because he responded to the lights. And the one where he sings "Suo Gan" to those Japanese soldiers. I don't know why this movie freakin' bombed at the box office(I just found that out),it beats the pants off of any other Speilberg works hands down!
