Okay...forget everything from the first Judge Dredd movie - forget the hokey lines, the curious humanizing of the character, the ease by which Judges go down in a single day, the Saturday afternoon rerun look and feel to the movie.
This movie is dark, gritty, unflinching, and makes its commentary profoundly--but in a hugely understated way. There are no flippant jokes...the bloody gunfight violence is like nothing I've ever seen before - real life imagining of video games perhaps. Everything about this movie is BIG: Dredd's badassery, the realistic feel of the bad guys, the tension simmering just under the surface. Economical on time...but big in scale. Olivia Thirlby as a blonde...omg...hotness. She really makes this movie in the same way that Denise Richards made Wild Things.
Not exactly a good date movie (try The Master or Trouble with the Curve maybe), but if you're out with the guys go see this movie. You will NOT be disappointed.
