Clearly not for everyone, but worth it for those who enjoy action and CBMs.
DREDD is an almost pitch perfect representation of the actual comic. FAR superior to the Stallone flick. It feels post apocalyptic, gritty, dirty, and you get a sense of the rough justice doled out by judges. The film starts out fast and doesn't let up. Urban plays DREDD almost Clint Eastwood-ish with a mix of Stallone. Imagine a cross between the lines "Go ahead make my day" and "Murdock ...I'm coming for you" that is what Urban brings to the table and it's pretty good.
The actress who plays his newly assigned rookie partner is a little underwhelming, but ultimately gets the character off the ground.
This is a "Tower" movie...in that the whole thing takes place in a 200 story mega block. The concept of moving up (or down) the floors to get the bad guys is very cool, but no one does better than Die Hard. There are some issues with the film, that are really small quibbles. For one all of the floors are the same and there is a slight feeling of repetitiveness.
The film itself is great to look at. I was a little worried about the DREDD costume and helmet...but man was I wrong. The Slo-mo effects are very cool to watch, and give an artistic beauty to horrific violence that's happening on screen. This is a violent movie. Honestly there are a few scenes that could have gone a different way and been much worse, or awesome depending on your point of view.
I'd see this one again in standard 2D there is no reason to see it in 3D. With the horde of other pretty good films coming out this one will probably fall by the wayside which is too bad. It's much better than the #'s will show. I hope it will get legs and do better.
If they make a sequel and I hope they do, I hope it has a more open world feel.
