The first full-length identified film of the character ‘Dracula’, adapted from a play based on the novel by Irish-born British author Abraham Stoker. The film features Count Dracula [Bela Lugosi], a wealthy enigmatic individual who wishes to purchase an estate in England. Dracula with the help of his eccentric accomplice Renfield [Dwight Frye] scares and terrorizes the family who live next door, until he meets his match from famed vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing [Edward Van Sloan], who drives a wooden stake through his enemy’s heart. Director Todd Browning [The Unknown -1928] vision of a darkly toned setting, tuned with a harrowing score and gloomy cinematography all enhances the scenes to create a very chilly atmosphere. Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi extradite his character with skilled experience brought about from his prior years of portraying the title role on Broadway, as he will be continued to be identified with the specific role throughout his lack-lustered career. Actors Edward Van Sloan and Dwight Frye had lucrative roles in defining the characters of Dr. Waldman and Fritz for the movie Frankenstein [1931]. There are over 30 films made about Count Dracula.
