Good, But Not Best Picture Material

star33

This is a "fun" film, with very nice acting by all involved save the Director's pallid cameo. No surprises, the all star cast are well chosen, and do a fine job with the material. Tarantino intentionally squeezes more blood than one would reasonably expect from each body, but hey, that's part of the fun...the blood running so freely. The story line is fairly predictable, except the part about needing a special invitation to visit the slave owner's estate...BUT, the story wouldn't have been as interesting if they went there logically . It IS surprising to see how fast Django travels from the Mississippi Plantation...mostly flat land, to what are clearly the brown hills of California...only a day away, hahahahaha...I'm not sure how this discontinuity is supposed to square with the geography of Mississippi and the surrounding areas. In any event, the bad guys get what's coming to them...one good guy, Dr. Schultz, bites the bullet, and Django gets his woman back, free and clear.
I don't see how this film made the Best Picture list...it's good...it's enjoyable, but it's by no means great. I've seen Silver Lining Playbook, and Argo, and by far, there's more depth, breadth and substance to SLP than any other film I've seen for 2012....no contest. All respect to the W twins and Q, but Q, next time you make a movie, do yourself a favor and leave yourself out of any acting.
