Custer of the West(1968)- User Reviews

Historically inaccurate but still lots of fun

This is a big budget (for its time) panoramic pic that takes huge liberties with the truth. If George Custer had any sympathy for the Native Americans he faced it was never apparent and thats equally true in his officer corps. Custer was a political general whose major ambition was a big win that would propell him to the presidency. He is made to appear to be no more than a simple soldier.

There are inconsistencies and gaffes in the little things as well. Early in the movie we watch Custer run his entire command into the ground through punishing double quick drills. Not only didn't this happen but the troops are carrying infantry weapons (they look like Springfield 1859 rifles). Interesting movie? Yes. Great scenery? without a question. Historically accurate? Doesn't even come close.
