A dark tale from a German enlisted man's point of view (Colburn). He hates the war and especially officers. Things aren't going well on the Russian Front. The film moves with a certain grace, with German children singing in the backround to some of the most fierce battles ever depicted on film. Visually intense, dark, and realistic to a point. The predictability of the antogonist is annoying. Best acting I've seen from Colburn.
