The daughter of a musician and a classically trained dancer, it's no wonder that British actress Stephanie Lawrence was well known for starring in some of the most popular musicals of the London stage. Making her West End debut as a rollerskating tap dancer in the play Forget Me Not Lane at the age of 16, Lawrence would soon move on to Broadway, as well as roles in film and television. After being chosen to take over the lead in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita in 1981, Lawrence later portrayed Marilyn Monroe in Marilyn!, donned roller-skates for Starlight Express, and portrayed Grizabella in Cats. In 1993, after a brief stint in the West End, Lawrence went to New York, where she was nominated for a Tony for her role in Blood Brothers. Lawrence's film credits include Buster (1988) and a role in the film version of Phantom of the Opera (1989). On November 4, 2000, Stephanie Lawrence was found dead in her London home. She was 50. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
