Tall, gaunt character player in occasional lead roles (e.g., Susan Sontag's "Brother Carl" 1971). Memorable in films by Gillo Pontecorvo ("Kapo" 1960), Luis Bunuel ("The Milky Way" 1969) and Jean-Luc Godard ("Detective" 1982), and as the embittered but enlightened presumptive father in "Rouge Baiser" (1985).
