French director who eschewed the stylistic advances of the New Wave in favor of traditional technical proficiency and lightweight, commercial subject matter. Exceptions to his mostly routine output include the taut political thriller "Dossier 51" (1978) and the mildly surreal "La lectrice" (1988).
