Forceful star of the Soviet stage and screen, best known in the west for his subdued yet flamboyant and powerful performances in the title roles of three Eisenstein films: "Alexander Nevsky" (1938), "Ivan the Terrible Part I" (1944) and "Ivan the Terrible Part II (1946). Cherkasov's autobiography, "Notes of a Soviet Film Actor", was published in 1953.
