Cloud Atlas Shrugged

I don't usually write reviews, however, if this review saves one neuron in anyone's head from exploding, then it is worth the effort. This movie is, at best, a poor attempt at story telling. Even the concept is absurd. And if you are not a Chuck Heston fan, you will probably miss over half the references to previous apocalyptic movies. The movie never provides an exposition of the story which enables the appreciation of whatever it is that it is about. Is it a tale that humanity never learns from its mistakes, or is it a tale of human decency with transcends the evil found in this world, or is it some "proof" of reincarnation of kindred spirits, or is it some weird trans century science type communication technique? Which? well, I guess the Wachowski siblings didn't know either, cause if they did, it isn't on the screen.

What made "the Matrix" such a good movie, was that it was a good story, maybe a little "fantastic" but nonetheless, a good story that was entertaining. You cared about the characters in the Matrix, unlike the underdeveloped characters in CA. The cuts from character to character, from century to century, from "situation" to "situation" were a jumbled attempt to tie the parts together to make the whole greater than the sum of the parts without any development of any character or situation.

Juxstaposition was supposed to substitute for a "logic" of why one event was related to a part of another, but they often just seemed "out of place." One example is the scene at the nuclear reactor where Halle Berry's character meets Tom Hank's character. They meet for 10 min or so, and we are asked to believe that this meeting has significance spanning centuries and changes the path of all mankind. The scene was a minor and very brief encounter - of no significance, and we are asked to believe it has cosmic consequences.

And now, I come to Mr. Tom Hanks. Liked him in "Bosom Buddies," but Peter Scolari was funnier. Tom Hanks lost it for me when he participated in the propaganda film "Magnificent Desolation" wherein he strongly suggested that man never set foot on the moon. In point of fact, he suggested that the moon landing was just a government hoax, but never provided any thought as to why the government would perform such a hoax. Good ole Tom who has made considerable money playing an astronaut.... Adding discredit to very brave men and women, hard working scientists and engineers who dedicated their lives to "putting a man on the moon, within this decade." His choice of participation in this movie highlights just how much the hollywood croud thinks we will watch whatever they dish out.... Tom, this was the last film you make that I will watch. as I say, Peter Scolari IS funnier and you are no serious actor.

Want to see a great science-fiction movie about time travel? Loopers! now that is a movie that will make you think.
