I'll admit first off that the movie itself wasn't that bad, and the story was decent, but there was one thing that really irked me throughout. Rather than make us want to feel for the main characters and hope they achieve a better life, I felt as though the audience is driven to dislike the characters. This obviously wasn't the intention but it's how I came away feeling.
The kid has a dream that CJ7 has magical powers and can do special things like make him high-tech sunglasses and fight a vicious dog. When he wakes up to find that CJ7 might just be a "normal" alien, he becomes a little spaz and actually tries to physically harm CJ. He goes as far as almost drowning the poor thing in a school toilet. I didn't feel for this kid at all. In fact, I felt more like punching him in the face. Apparently, CJ7 doesn't seem to mind as for some unknown reason he's extremely attached to the kid and will forgive him for anything.
The relationship between the father and son is supposed to be something special. Well, that must be why the kid calls his father names like "Dumbass" and the father locks his son in a tiny cabinet as a punishment. I'm not sure if this is just typical asian film making, but it just seemed messed up to me.
