How many hundreds of times has this story been told in film? Why does any filmmaker think we will go to see yet another variation, as how different can any more of them be? The answer: not much, other than visual.
I was bored after the first 20 minutes and it did not get any better, and it made no matter that the film was beautifully shot and the sets and costumes were wonderful. This storyline has been used up with no other ways to make it interesting, and using different stars in the lead roles also makes no difference. It is a dead item and should be put to rest.
Michelle Pfieffer's constant bloodshot and watery eyes made her look too aged for the part, no matter how thin she was and how fervent her acting was. Rupert Friend as Cheri(what?) played a drip of a pouty, spoiled and immature child man who was very unattractive in all ways other than physical(nudge, nudge, get it?). Kathy Bates as his mother was the very best presence in this story, but even she could not make this tired and worn tale any more than a tolerable version.
