Catfish(2010)- User Reviews

I do believe this movie is based on a true story, just not the one they portrayed. Or maybe it was a variation of it. Regardless, this sounds awfully similar to the story of Nancy Nusbaum, also known as:

This woman is infamous on the internet for scamming men online, pretending to be a young hot woman who leads an interesting life. In reality she is an unattractive older woman seeking to scam people out of their money, time and affection. It seems she has run every scam in the book, even pretending to be a spouse of a 9/11 victim.

There were websites dedicated to stopping her and news stories about her if you do some searches by her numerous aliases. Search for Den of Angels and the story in the Trentonian for a start and the comprehensive story is on the Newhouse News Service and entitled Web of Deceit Unravels by Robin Gaby Fisher.

As far as why I know this, I think I had the unfortunate experience of getting to know her back in the fall of 1993 on the Delphi Internet Service. At that time she was known as Alexis Stanton and allegedly living in Newport Beach, CA. She was real good at what she does and real twisted. Fortunately I escaped with little more than my pride damaged, others were not so lucky.

Needless to say I thought this movie was excellent and really brought back some memories.
