The Final Straw
I have had the good fortune of reading Stephen King's novel...(this story not being one that lends itself to a movie).
The book is better, but the film version of Carrie does have something to of its own to offer, and that is the outstanding performances of Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek, both of whom shine like new pennies.
There is also the prescence of John Travolta early in his career, and Amy Irving early in hers.
Not to mention Brian DePalma who really makes something out of this film.
What's most striking about this story, is the rush one can get from pushing an already racked, and fragile creature over the edge...and the dire consequences that can come from that.
Shy and mousy Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) has been the butt of every cruel joke since toddlerhood.
Raised by the fanatical and insane Margaret White (Piper Laurie), Carrie's home is hell, and her school-life is not much better.
Constantly demeaned and humilliated, Carrie is sorrounded by kids who have no compassion for her situation, and do everything they can to make it worse...
That is until the pretty and popular Sue Snell (Amy Irving) feeling geniune remorse for her actions, asks her boyfriend Tommy Ross (William Katt), to take Carrie to the prom, as a way of making amends what she's done...
But there are certain others in the group, among them Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen), and Billy Nolan (John Travolta) who see this prom night as perfect opportunity to do some mischief...not knowing that this will be the thing that kills them...
And not even the caring and compassionate Miss Collins (Betty Buckley) can stop things now.
People say Carrie's gifts in this story are evil.
That cannot be the case, since evil doesn't wield that much power, and to say it does is. uninformed and out-right stupid.
I think this story is a reminder of what happens, when bullying people start preying too much on the weak and the helpless.
I think it's a warning not go down the "wide path" so to speak, lest powerful forces come to the aid of the ones we're oppressing, and we be wiped out completely.
