not quite $10 actors

Jeremy Irons has won numerous awards, including Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy and honorary Cesar, to name a few. Fanny Ardant is one of Europe's top actresses with many awards (and wife of Franois Truffaut), and Joan Plowright is a Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee. Franco Zeffirelli is one of Europe's most famous directors, with many Oscar, Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy awards.

Fanny Ardant turns in one of her most amazing cinema performances, being described as astonishing, magnificent, and outstanding from reviewers at the Phildelphia Daily News, SF Gate/Chronicle, Rex Reed, Kevin Thomas, Jeffrey Lyons, People Magazine, LA Weekly and more.

In this loving tribute from Callas' dear friend, Zeffirelli honors her more than exposes her warts, yet it does show the strain of attempting to live up to a self image as the world's greatest diva. The "Carmen" film-within-a-film sections and rehearsals are the best moments, and they are extensive.

Zeffirelli sometimes glosses over things of interest to his audience in order to keep us focused on his intent, but this is an ultimately very satisfying and sumptuously photographed film that is garnering standing ovations and shouts of "Brava!" at its audience screenings.

It's worth the $10 ticket gamble to anyone who likes quality art house films or the actors and filmmakers connected to this one... or just wants to hear Callas' wonderful voice in a theater.
