Downtown life

this films evokes a sense captured through a different narrative mode, that of the work by Martin Wong, for instance, and many of the other artists who are now celebrated through the NYU Fales archive on NY Downtown Life & Arts. while always maintaining the "human story" through considerable tenderness in some instances, it nonetheless reminds us in the first instance of the very real class-society (that means non-egalitarian, folks...!) of our mode of democracy, of the prescience reference to the police-state that we live in, and of "consume, conform, submit" aspect of "art" as commodified object. the negotiation that takes place for the protagonist -- with real life consequences, material as well as emotional -- are nothing less than real.

i would recommend it to all those who are mindlessly profiting from the gentrification -- whether as consumers or as perveyors of the consumable -- to consider.
