I saw this movie a few months after I was widowed. I could understand the emotional numbness of the character, her initial impulse to commit suicide, and her eventual decision to create a life for herself again. When it is revealed that her deceased husband is not perfect, that he has had an affair, I concluded that the film had emotional truth; that the writers wanted to avoid cliches. It was touching that she was willing to accept her husband's child by his mistress.
Visually, the color blue is one of grief and depression. Water is a feminine element, so it is appropriate that Juliette Binoche's character spends so much time in it. Swimming laps represents her journey from widowhood to new life.
