Beowulf(2007)- User Reviews

Given the box office success and the number of Yahoo reviews on thie piece, it is apparent to me that others were predetermined/preprogramed to like this film. I'd be willing to wager that only a small minority of the viewers have ever actually READ Beowulf, and a good quantity had no idea it had a prior existence to this Animated version. Those expecting (as I foolishly did) a retelling of this treasured piece of literature could not help but be horrified--not by the ridiculous monsters, but rather the shameless butchering of the original story. OK, OK, OK. The animations are pretty realistic, but digital technology STILL can't create a believable human being. This looks like the wooden movements and facial expressions of Madden's NFL video games. In fact, I find this to actually BE a video game (filled with the constant killing, violence, and mutilations that charactize so many of them) masquerading as a movie. That this kind of stuff interests so many viewers makes me worried about the future. What does continual exposure to blood and guts really do to the young? I know they (and the companies that make this crap) will claim that it's all just in good fun and no one is going to be desensitized to violence because of it, but I have my strong doubts about that view. At any rate, don't expect a movie or a plausible story here. Rather expect to have your brains blown out by a continual assault of loud music and ugly killings (I even felt empathetic towards the monsters). Personally, I found watching this to be a thoroughly unpleasant endeavor. My recommendation? Read the book and rent a Classic Film instead.
