Atonement(2007)- User Reviews

My friend and I went to see this film. I wasn't really excited to see it as I had mixed feelings. I loved the visuals and the time period but the war scenes lasted far too long. We got it. There was a war! There wasn't enough build up as to why these two people loved each other. Neither my friend nor I found it quite believable. Nor did we care at all when the two stars of the film died! In a romantic drama like this it is imperative you care for the characters and are moved by what happens to them. We didn't give a fig! We both would have loved more about the romance and more about the sister Vanessa Redgrave played. I wasn't especially fond of the technique of showing what the sister saw and then showing the real story. It felt too cinematic. I heard an interview with the screen writer. He said originally they were going to do a voice over . I think that would have made a more effective film. Stick to your guns next time and make the film you want I say!! It was fairly ok but nothing I would ever wish to sit through again.
