This is a wonderful little film that won't do well with unsophisticated American viewers. The more you think about the film, the more interesting it becomes. The main characters are an older couple, happily married. Their happy, stable lives are used as a counter point to the boozy, smoke ridden desperate lives of their two friends, Mary and Ken, neither of whom have much in their lives apart from work -- boring, average work.
The setting is a small, very average middle-class English home with produce from the allotment and tea in mugs. The whole story is a bit of a morality play, but fascinating to watch. The acting is superb. Mary's desperation and misplaced desires are written on her face and her body language. If you need more than car chases and sex in your entertainment, give this a try.
