I had read about one quarter of the book before seeing the movie. The book is quite good, but the movie is a crashing bore. The main theme of the book - pointing out the massive hypocrisy of society allowing affairs for men but not for women - is almost completely obscured. Placing most of the film on stage makes the whole endeavor seem cheap, not what we expect from such a movie. And the focus on two love stories was incredibly tiresome. If you want to see a good movie set in Russia see "Fiddler on the Roof" : Great music, great stories, and love stories we actually CARE about.
