Stoppard Ruined This Great Piece of Literature

Tom Stoppard, the screenwriter, did a disservice to Leo Tolstoy by making this a silly, self-indulgent theater piece. If Stoppard wants to keep writing plays, then he should stay in New York and live on Broadway and stay away from movies.

The movie has horrible casting and constantly focuses on Stoppard's nonsensical segues from miniature train sets to big locomotives instead of focusing on the substance of a brilliant novel. The movie is full of cliches - religious man bad, adulterous wife nuts, weak lover confused. Oh give me a break. And Levin. He looks like he's from the cast of Deliverance. Levin's story is huge and at least equal to Anna's. He's not Devil from Eastern Kentucky ("Justified").

There is no major character in this movie to like except Kitty. In the novel, Tolstoy lets us appreciate everyone's dilemma. I don't think Stoppard understands Tolstoy because his script and its production might as well be based on a cartoon.

Did I say I didn't like the movie? Now I have to wait another 10 years before someone dares again to make this epic.
