I hope you get a lot of husband points for this

...because you deserve them. I lost a few when I mentioned to my wife "this is a movie...designed as a play...about a book...entailing ballroom dancing in 19th century Russia."

Why do people have this urge to take something good (well, at least decent) in its natural form and add their own flavor to it? The blur-switches, prop-changes and freeze-life cinematography that the director was "inspired" to try made as much sense as handing a copy of "Hey, Jude" to Beyonce and asking her to add some flair.

Future note: Any time you're thinking of seeing a "critically acclaimed" movie at your local avant-garde theater...just stay home and whack your knee with a hammer, it's more rewarding and also saves gas.
