John Cleese’s post-Python knockout. The film features four perfectly pitched comic performances: Jamie Lee Curtis as a conniving vamp with a heart of gold, Michael Palin as a stuttering hired gun with a soft spot for animals, John Cleese as the beleaguered husband of a deliciously awful upper-class twit, and Kevin Kline as a psychotic Anglo-phobe who believes that Aristotle was Belgian and that a central tenet of Buddhism is “every man for himself.” One rollicking set piece follows another, making “A Fish Called Wanda” one of the funniest flicks of the ’80s, which was, of course, a pretty good decade for comedies. --Jonathan Crow
