"All I ever wanted was to sing to God."

star55

This is an old man's complaint, as he sits in a mental hospital after an unsuccessful suicide attempt, and confesses grimly to a priest how he, Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), offered his chastity to God in exchange for immortality as a composer, and got shafted in favor of Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce), whom Salieri deems utterly unworthy.

It is the story of one man's ridiculous war against God (which he wages through the destruction of His instrument), and of another man's pure genius (which he blythely broadcasts to the world, unaware of the violent envy it inspires in the man he believes to be his friend).

Antonio Salieri is Vienna's Court Composer.
A deeply sanctimonius man, he craves fame and immortality, and has no doubt that because of the "perfect" life he's led, the glory he deserves will be his.

He believes this...until Mozart comes into the picture.

Mozart is a merrily amoral man who is blatantly arrogant, shamelessly lecherous, and who possesses the brilliance Salieri would literally kill for.

Salieri feels entitled to the talent, and is furious at God for reneging on what he felt to be their bargain.

From then on, he sets out to hinder and hurt Mozart in every way possible, causing his destruction while at the same time idolizing his music.

This movie is a masterpiece in so many ways it is impossible to enumerate them.

The Directing and Screenplay alone are a work of art. The acting is brilliant, and the dialogue is over the top.

Some of the lines spoken in this movie are the most beautiful, most powerful ever filmed.

This is a story that's amazing in it's execution; breathtaking in it's depth.

A Sistine Chapel of film-making.
Amazing in every way.
