Follows the story line quite well and is long as mentioned on most reviews. Unfortunately, a good part of the noticable length comes from the poorly acted (overacted) rolls portraying the American involvement. A great war story.
I'm a big fan of Gene Hackman and Redford but this wasn't their shining hour. Elliot Gould as the floating bridge erector was awful as was Ryan O'Neil as Gen. Gavin. Much of the American 82nd Airborne portion could have been either reduced or eliminated altogether. Their tack was simple compared to what the Brits Airborne had to go through.
However Sean Connery, Richard Attenborough, Dirk Bogart, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, and especially Edward Fox were terrific. James Caan in the forest recovery scene was worth the "price of admission" alone.
On balance, beyond Private Ryan, Platoon, and the Band of Brothers of the more modern era, this movie ranks right up there with the Longest Day.
