When originally released in 1968, 2001 set a new SCIFI standard for special effects. Kubrick took great risks with this movie with its groundbreaking realism (for its day), visual oriented story telling style and magnificent blend of classical music such as the Blue Danube Waltz and Also Sprach Zarathustra. 2001 was never about a plot or the characters. None of the actors were big name stars. Instead, the viewer is exposed to deep concepts about the evolution and smallness of man in relation to the immensity of time and space of the universe. If your intellect isn't provoked by this movie then the viewer is probably better suited for the Star Wars series.
