2001: A Space Odyssey(1968)- User Reviews

Probably the most ambitious and influential movie ever made. Some may argue that a movie that cannot be understood the first time you watch it (without any background) is not a good movie. But even for first timers, there is no denying the incredible attention to detail, the fantastic cinematography, the beautiful silent film qualities of the first 30 minutes without dialogue, the immersive atmosphere infused in emotions such as fear, bewilderment and awe, and the solidly grounded scientific aspect of this masterpiece.

Almost forty years (!) after this movie was made, and still nothing comes even close. This is a testament to Kubrick's dedication to his craft, and to excellence of all those involved.

In watching the newly released 2-disk DVD set, this movie remains as relevant now as any time before, as its speculation of human intelligence being an alien gift to us continues to be mindblowing. By showing the aliens as magical and completely incomprehensible beings, Kubrick and Clarke really took the scifi to a new level which is rarely followed by most of today's mindless derivatives.
