In the arid mountainous landscapes of Algeria, Aya, a young girl of twelve, is digging a plot of land when a police car pulls up. The policemen hands her a letter describing the accidental death of her elder brother who was doing his military service. As soon as the rest of the family is informed, the father, Mouloud, sets off to collect his sonâs body. Determined to do right by his family, he braves all sorts of dangers to bring back his son's remains. Upon his return, he finds that his wife Fatima has withdrawn into her sorrow. Fearing that she might never come out of this depressed state, Mouloud tries everything to bring a smile to her face. Like all peasants in the hostile lands of Aures, he knows that to give up is to die a little.
