A documentary that follows the journey of the Hungarian Olympic water polo team, who, in 1956 fought for their nation and their ideals, turning an ordinary Olympic game into the "Blood in the Water Match." As the athletes left for the Melbourne Games, a popular, democratic uprising was brutally crushed by the Soviet Red Army; the Hungarian team sought their revenge against the Soviets in the final rounds, turning the water red with their own blood, inciting riots in the stands, and foreshadowing their country's ultimate independence.
