In 1988, Platon Makowski and four friends, all brilliant young academics, give up science in favour of the dubious byways of post-Soviet business. Profiting from the break-down of the system, Platon, with alarming inventiveness, dreams up a thousand surprising financial schemes, mostly on the margins of legality, in order to thwart the constant opposition of the authorities.
