Beginning as a personal quest for family roots, director Barbara Hammer travels to Ukraine in the former Soviet Union seeking information on her maternal grandparents, both born at the turn of the century near the same village. But in searching for her own Ukrainian identity and history, she discovers a country just opening up to a multiplicity of identities and cultural differences. Expanding her focus, Hammer discovers that Ukrainians have vaired and surprising opinions about feminism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and basic human rights.
