A period drama set in Edinburgh about a social fixture, Deacon Brodie who's a bit of a rake; he's gone heavily into debt while making a mechanized gallows and, when a robbery he masterminds goes awry, the tough-talking deacon is brought to trial. His reputation for drinking, gambling and whoring is exposed, and he's sentenced to die on his own creation.
