Katrin Engelhardt is in her mid-thirties and works as a draughtswoman for the architect Juergen Benthagen. For some time, Katrin and her married boss have enjoyed both a professional relationship and a private affair. While away together in Corsica, Katrin learns from Juergen that his wife is four months' pregnant. All at once, Katrin's dreams of a life together with Juergen are dashed and her entire future hangs in the balance. Deeply hurt, she puts an end to her relationship with Juergen and quits her job. There are still a few days left before her return flight and Katrin makes use of the time left to try to regain her footing. But everything she attempts seems to pull her down into a maelstrom of pain and hopelessness. By chance, she meets a 17-year-old boy named Malte, whose unconditional affection succeeds in dragging Katrin out of the swamp which had threatened to engulf her.
