Shanti (Waheeda Rehman) and Raj (Sanjeev Kumar) are deeply in love, but when Raj's mother pressures him to marry his wealthy boss's daughter and become a partner in his firm, he agrees--even after Shanti tells him she's pregnant with his child. Shanti leaves town, gives birth to a boy named Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), and raises him to be a strong, proud young man. When she dies, Vijay vows that he will confront his father and avenge his mother's ill-treatment, and he sets out to interrupt Raj's wealthy and complacent life. Yash Chopra's sweeping family saga is built on solid performances from the entire cast, but Kumar and Bachchan are especially excellent as the clashing father and son.
