Yash Chopra's action-filled drama traces one family's long and difficult struggle to stay together in the face of corruption and hardship. Blackmailed by ruthless gangsters, a union leader sells out his principles in order to save his two young sons, but soon after abandons them in shame. Their mother, Sumitra (Nirupa Roy), raises the boys in poverty as best she can. Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) eventually becomes a police officer, while Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) is lured into the criminal underworld as he attempts to amass more and more wealth. When Sumitra and Ravi discover the source of Vijay's success, the family is torn apart, and Vijay is soon faced with some very difficult decisions.
