Director Danny Boyle (TRAINSPOTTING, 28 DAYS LATER) returns to blackly comic form with the made-for-British-television film VACUUMING COMPLETELY NUDE IN PARADISE. Pushing aside his dreams of becoming a successful DJ, Pete (Michael Begley) accepts a job as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman in order to help his stripper girlfriend pay the rent. The reluctant hireling is soon apprenticed to veteran salesman Tommy Rag (Timothy Spall in a manic, over-the-top performance), whose sleazy tactics and all-consuming ambition further aggravate Pete's inner turmoil. Boyle's character study of working-class angst and desperation is brought to life by Jim Cartwright's witty screenplay and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle's dizzying digital camerawork, which adds a pitch-perfect sense of unease to the already queasy proceedings.
