Cable release: (E!): March 18, 2001.
A television actress known for her role as America's favorite mom leads a secret life of drug and alcohol addiction in the E! original movie SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL. Kathie Lee Gifford stars as actress Amanda Berkeley, whose wholesome sitcom, WHADDAYA WANT MOM?, has rocketed the former stand-up comedian to incredible fame and fortune. But behind the scenes Amanda's divalike demands on set and self-destructive exploits at home are fodder for the tabloids. Her longtime manager, Marty Levinne (Howie Mandel), has the unenviable task of cleaning up her disasters until Amanda finally has a complete breakdown and threatens suicide while standing on the ledge of Times Square's jumbo monitor. An obligatory stint in rehab becomes a publicity opportunity for the studio executives anxious to replace the aging Amanda. Gifford's normally squeaky-clean image is tweaked by the film, which shows the actress groping her television director, smoking marijuana, drinking to incapacitation, and abusing prescription medication. SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL was written and co-executive-produced by Mark Solomon, a former writer on Brett Butler's television show GRACE UNDER FIRE.
