A depiction of the lives of sixty thousand Brazilian migrant laborers (carvoeiros) who make a meager living cutting down forests and producing charcoal for the multi-national pig-iron industry. The chronicle takes an in-depth look at the flip side of society's rage against the destruction of this fragile ecosystem: the needs of the native populations of the Amazon basin must somehow find means to support themselves. Just as the trees and their inhabitants die by mutilation and fire, the carvoeiros fall victim to lung disease, exhaustion, malnutrition and smoke inhalation--resulting in calamitous social and health ramifications. In this war, the carvoeiros are the disposable work force on the front lines, fighting not for glory, but out of a need to feed their families.
