Part of the 2000 SEEN BY... series in which six directors filmed their vision of the night of December 31, 1999, Laurent Cantet's film finds a group of people escaping to a small island to remove themselves from the hubbub surrounding Paris. Led by Francois, the group, consisting of some of his friends and their children, wastes no time in boring themselves to tears. Adding to the tension, Francois and the island's caretaker plainly do not like each other, causing the group to feel ill at ease. It isn't long before the tensions cause people's frustrations and anxieties to boil over, creating confrontations that rival the fireworks in France's capital.
