A-Lan is a sensitive young writer who is caught in a raid on Tiananmen Square park--a cruising spot where gay men regularly meet--and is arrested by a police officer and taken into custody. While the police treatment of homosexuals is oppressive, A-Lan finds himself oddly attracted to his captor. He turns the interrogation into an opportunity to recount his life, focussing on various men he has loved. All of these men are visualised with the face of the police officer, whose story becomes entwined in A-Lan's.
