Lena is the New York-based granddaughter of a Jewish factory owner, whose premises in Germany are burned down by anti-Semites. Mrs. Fish, a German emigre in New York, sees news of the fire and recognises the owner as her father, long thought to be dead. She hires a lawyer to investigate, while her son meets Lena, and the two work out their shared history.
