The police call private eye Nick Trayne to find a local tycoon who has disappeared without a trace. Coming out of retirement to accept the challenge, Nick insinuates himself into the missing gentlemen's entourage, a collection of hangers-on, eccentrics and snobs, in order to find out what happened. A little looking around produces the missing man himself -- but he has fallen into a death-like trance and cannot explain his horrifying fate.
