One of the landmarks of Latin American cinema, Leopoldo Torre Nilsson's film examines the nature of courage. A soldier abandons his family to fight the natives living in the interior of Argentina. He flees in the face of battle, and becomes a deserter, but kills a man in self-defense. He eventually finds himself seeking asylum in an Indian village with the very people he left home to fight.
