Frank and Elaine Benson decide to divorce after twenty years, just as their daughter Nancy decides to get married to her boyfriend David. David's father Oliver disapproves and attempts to sabotage the relationship. When Nancy gets pregnant by accident, her parents agree to look after the baby, but Frank plans to persuade Nancy and David to raise the child themselves. Meanwhile, both Frank and Elaine are having trouble with their new single status.
