What's The Story

Wendy is an aspiring playwright working as a temp and sleeping with a married man. Her brother Jon is a neurotic college professor who is writing a book few will read and ending his long-term relationship. Suddenly a phone call comes, telling them that their estranged father's health is deteriorating and they are the only ones who can help him. After working so hard to get away from their father, Wendy and Jon find themselves putting their lives on hold and living together for the first time since they were kids. As they're reminded of why their family has chosen to live apart, they also see that they can rely on each other to help navigate the emotional minefield of their father's final days.

Three Good Reasons

  • 1Writer/Director Tamara Jenkins returns to the realm of family dysfunction for her first film since The Slums of Beverly Hills.
  • 2Laura Linney is never better than when she's playing a character dealing with difficult brothers (You Can Count on Me, Love Actually).
  • 3Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman's third critically acclaimed role this fall, along with Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and Charlie Wilson's War.

Bet You Didn't Know

Tamara Jenkins directed the short sex-education film Choices: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, which was written by four Florida teenagers. The film has been used in various school districts across the United States, and received Honorable Mention at the Hip Hop Odyssey Film Festival. More about The Savages on Yahoo! Movies
