What's The Story

This modern sci-fi thriller is a reimagining of a 1951 classic film which was in itself a reimagining of a 1940 short story. We know that the movie has been updated from its Cold War mentality, but the details of the plot are being guarded more closely than the crashed saucer at Area 51. We do know, however, that an alien named Klaatu arrives on Earth with an important mission, a mission which baffles both scientific and government authorities, but touches the heart of a young widow and her stepson.

Three Good Reasons

  • 1Supporting Keanu's eerily calm performance as Klaatu are luminous Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm, Golden Globe winner for "Mad Men."
  • 2The movie boasts eye-popping special effects, which should be particularly stunning in IMAX format.
  • 3While robots, giant alien spheres, and disintegrating trucks hold your kids' attention, they may also impart an important message about caring for our planet.

Bet You Didn't Know

The very first college class in science fiction was taught by Sam Moskowitz, editor of the magazine Science Fiction+. Harry Bates, author of the short story that inspired The Day the Earth Stood Still, was scheduled as a guest speaker at the class, but deliberately failed to show up as revenge for some edits Moskowitz had forced him to make on one of his stories.
